National Pride Month
Did you know that LGBTQ+ youth are overrepresented in the foster care system? Many having faced family rejection around their sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression? That’s why it’s so important to have an encouraging environment at home.
Here are a few tips you can use to make your home more welcoming for LGBTQ+ youth:
- Try using gender-neutral language when asking about relationships. For example, instead of, "Do you have a girlfriend?" ask, "Are you dating anyone?"
- Support their self-expression through their choices of clothing, jewelry, hairstyles, friends, and room decorations.
- Allow youth to participate in activities that interest them, regardless of whether these activities are stereotypically masculine or feminine.
